I step outside to pee
a rural man’s recourse
beneath the canopy
just lifted at the eastern edge
where brightest stars are dimmed.

Our rooster sends his shout
is echoed all about
by other cocks
by some far off and faint
to others further out
bright signal towers of twinkled sound
across the canopy below
where they too mark the dark
slashed for a second by a streak of light
before I’m back to bed by shiver sent
to tell my wife who then in fug of sleep
murmurs her acknowledgement.
